New Smoke Alarm Legislation

The new legislation requiring all homes and units throughout Queensland to be fitted with smoke alarms will take effect on 1 July 2007.

Child Safety at Home - Mission Possible

Child Safety at Home - Mission Possible

Child Safety at Home: Mission Possible is a communication campaign designed to assist parents and carers of children 0-4 years of age to identify potential risks within the home environment to reduce the high incidence of child injury in Queensland. 

The campaign is an initiative of the Department of Emergency Services and Queensland Health, with sponsorship from the Department of Local Government, Planning Sport and Recreation and the Department of Communities.

Avian influenza

Avian influenza (commonly known as 'bird flu') is a highly contagious viral infection found primarily in avian species. Many species of waterfowl can carry the disease but show no symptoms, while domestic fowls, such as chickens and turkeys, can develop a rapidly fatal condition.

Cyclones

Tropical cyclones (also known as hurricanes in North America and typhoons in Asia) are giant whirlwinds of air and dense cloud spiraling at over 120 km/hr around a central “eye” of low pressure.

Australia’s cyclone season is usually from December to April, and affects most of the Queensland coast.  The greatest threat lies north of the Tropic of Capricorn.

Blueprint for the Bush is a 10 year whole-of-government strategy to support the future sustainability, liveability and prosperity of rural Queensland.

It encompasses 171 initiatives and projects spead across 22 government agencies.  The scope of the initiatives, which range from streamlining and coordinating government services through to upgrading rural airports and managing pests and weeds, is almost as vast as the geographical area that they are intended to benefit.
